On Tuesday at 11AM, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will join immigrants from across Suffolk County on the Long Island Railroad platform in Brentwood to call for comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship. Since assuming leadership of a county that had previously been plagued by anti-immigrant politics, County Executive Bellone has worked to create a welcoming environment for immigrants in Suffolk County. Standing with immigrant community and union members in front of a powerful new pro-immigration reform advertisement from Local 32BJ (SEIU), County Executive Bellone will publicly announce that he stands with Long Island’s congressional delegation in calling for a comprehensive immigration reform to fix our broken immigration system.
Bellone’s support echoes that of an overwhelming majority of Long Islanders. Earlier this summer, a Long Island-wide poll by Harstad Research showed that the vast majority of Long Islanders, 80 percent, supports comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) legislation that includes a path to citizenship for the nation’s eleven million undocumented immigrants.
