The New York Times has a good article this morning on how the mess in business based immigration visas has had a negative impact on the New York economy. The TriState region uses more of these high tech visas than Silicone Valley, with about one in five going to firms in the New York area. Since 911 the process has gotten so convoluted and unpredictable that many of the best and the brightest are passing up New York and heading to London, which is close to eclipsing our fair city as the world financial capital.
As I reported last week, the U.S. cannot pretend that our economy exists in isolation. If London or Dublin is more welcoming of talent, the creative class of world citizens will migrate away from us.
UPDATE March 25, 2008 USA Today has an editorial today endorsing expansion of high tech visas.
