In the News Prince William & Suffolk Counties Race to the Bottom

The notoriously conservative Washington Post yesterday ran an article entitled "Prince William, a Year Later: A crackdown's toxic effects." Actually we have been hearing more and more from the Washington Post about the negative economic impact of anti-immigrant legislation....could it be that businesses and citizens are getting fed-up with hate rhetoric being spread in their communities?

This paragraph towards the beginning was especially interesting:

"Across the nation, Prince William has become synonymous with an ugly strain of nativist intolerance that has deep roots in American history but which is a slander on the county's generally well-educated and diverse population. In this region, almost every other major jurisdiction has spurned Prince William's approach."

Unfortunately, Suffolk County, along with Prince William County have both earned their reputations as being anti-immigrant and ignoring the economics of the situation. Both County leaders often take cues from each other as if to be in "a race to the bottom." (Thanks Luis!)

The result in Prince William County are exactly the same as other communities around the country who have instituted these dark age policies....Latinos, including large percentages here legally, have left. Maybe that's what Prince William and Suffolk Counties' goal is....but that's not the Suffolk County I was born and raised in.
