In the News Southern Poverty Law Center Testifies Tonight At Suffolk Leg.

UPDATE: Here is report on Mark Potok's testimony.

Mark Potok is scheduled to testify tonight at the Suffolk Legislature before the Suffolk Hate Crimes Task Force. This is the first time he will be speaking about the SPLC's report on Suffolk's Climate of Fear since its release in August. The meeting is open to the public and it should provide an exciting opportunity to learn more about the research behind the report.

The meeting is tonight, Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30 pm in the Suffolk County Legislature’s Auditorium in Hauppauge. Presentations are scheduled from: Mark Potok from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Steve Freeman from the Anti Defamation League and Sandra Dunn from the Hagedorn Foundation.

This is an open meeting and members of the public are encouraged to attend. Please feel free to forward to anyone you think may be interested in this information

Glad to hear it's an open meeting- I would expect there will be some critics of this fascistic meeting showing up.

In the November 2000 edition of Harper's, Washington editor Ken Silverstein published an exposé of the SPLC and its tactics and operational activities. Entitled “The Church of Morris Dees,” Silverstein concluded that the SPLC “spends most of its time—and money—on a relentless fundraising campaign, peddling memberships in the church of tolerance
with all the zeal of a circuit rider passing the collection plate.”

lest anyone think that one of our supporters is accusing Leg. Gregory of holding a "fascistic" meeting,I'd like to point out that a lance sjogren is a prominent supporter of anti-immigrant Congressman tom Tancredo. Lance is fully entitled to his opinion, but i would not want it mis-ascribed.

Well, Pat, it was somewhat inflammatory for me to use the word "fascistic", however, you clearly have a similar weakness as witnessed by your inflammatory and false characterization of Tom Tancredo as "anti-immigrant".

But I was the one that started the heated rhetoric so I apologize.

As Mr. Harrington points out, however, the SPLC has been subject to some exposes which in my view are rather damning.

In addition to the 2000 article, I encourage those who seek the truth to check out the 2009 article by Alexander Cockburn on the SPLC which I understand was published in The Nation.

It is not only conservatives that object to the tactics of the SPLC, people of good faith on the left side of the political spectrum also are very disturbed by the behavior and tactics of the SPLC, for two reasons: One a concern about the chilling effect of character assassination on public discourse, and the other a concern that people who might otherwise contribute to worthy causes such as helping the poor and the hungry instead contribute to an organization like the SPLC.

SPLC = Slimy Putrid Lying Charlatans

Lance, i know who tom Tancredo is and i stand by my characterization.

You, on the other hand are unlikely to know anything about Legislator Gregory and your reference to him convening a "fascist meeting" is entirely unsupported.
