My thoughts and compassion go to the family of Mr. Lucero. Those who viciously claimed the life of this innocent man are cowards who hide in thee shadows. No punishment is too harsh for these so called teens. They are monsters along with their parents who are also responsible for this horrible crime since the killers learned hate from those responsible for their upbringing. We are a nation who just elected Barack Obama because we're tired of the hate in this country. We gave him a mandate to join all Americans together in peace and harmony. The Republicans are still the party of hate, but they haven't realized yet that the rest of the country has moved beyond them. We are moving forward into the 21st century. They would like to stay in the 13th. Know that the rest of the country including those of us out here in California are pulling for you and hoping that those who still hate will either learn tolerance or be marginalized by those of us who love.

Sincere sympathy and apologies to the Lucerno family. I fail to understand the bigotry that drove those young men to commit such an evil act. I refuse to believe that they are representative of anything more than a minority of uneducated Americans. Love&Peace

Let us all hope and pray for the friends and love one of Marcello, that they don't take this situation as a bench-mark for a life-time of hate and doubt about our community/nation. May this hidious event do not cloud everyone's perception of human nature.

Your tragedy belongs to us all, and I will do, as I have before, whatever I can to help stop this madness. Our nation is still a rough, barbaric one, based on division and violence.
Perhaps the leadership of our president-elect can take this nation toward maturity, intelligence, and good.
I hope your hearts can accept our sympathy. It must be so very hard for you now.

I am a non-Hispanic-Caucasian-American citizen and I am appalled at the behavior of these misguided youths. I am in complete solidarity with my brothers and sisters from outside the borders of the U.S., after all, we are all Americans, whether South, Central or North. When will these supposed "Christians" realize that we are "all one, under God, indivisible.." When will they realize that we are “our brother's keepers”. When will they realize that "but for the grace of God, there goes I". I am NOT even a so-called religious person but I surely understand the meaning that is fundamental to all religions, to be a compassionate human where love, not fear is the guiding force. May peace go with tu familia Marcello Lucero and may you rest in peace.

My sympathies are with the grieving family and friends. When the perpetrators are caught and prosecuted, may they suffer the full consequence of their despicable actions. Viva Yo! to all Latinos and Vaya Con Dios to the family.

i believe in my heart that the people who thrive on hate and manufacture fear are a dwindling number in this country and in this world. but only people who carry love and hope and peace, even when they are struck down -- by violence, by grief, by anger -- can make this increasingly true as each day passes.
my deepest condolences for your loss.

to marcello's family: nothing i can say will help you, i know. i am so embarrassed for this country that we still produce people of such bad character as those who killed marcello.
pointless acts of violence like this one diminish us all. these radical examples of irrational hatred are a disgrace in a nation that supposedly values openness, fairness and acceptance. we must all work to put an end to the stupidity and meanness that end in hate crimes.
in the name of peace, love and brotherhood,

My heart goes out to the family of Mr.Lucero. Please know that the majority of Americans are not represented by the ignorant actions of these obviously disturbed young men. They have been influenced by the culture of hate and blame that so often erupts amongst the uneducated at a time of economic and social upheaval. We can only hope to continue to reach out to eachother and speak out against the kind of bigotry and hatemongering that treats "others" as less than worthy of respect and basic human dignity. I hope your family can find a way to create good from this tragedy and know that millions of americans stand with you in sorrow and outrage at this senseless act.

To Mr Lucero's family I send my deepest sympathies and prayers that they find peace at a time like this. Nothing; no words, cards or recompense can bring their beloved brother and son back to them. If there is a lesson to be learned it will be for those who committed this heinous crime. If the culprits have a soul, and that might be arguable, they are at risk of losing it for the act they chose to perpetrate. We are a country, a people of tolerance and promise, despite the quantity of those whose ignorance and hate might argue otherwise. May Mr. Lucero's spirit rest peacefully.

Dear Lucero Family,
My heart breaks for you and yours--the tragedy of losing a family member, especially in such hurtful circumstances, I can only imagine has been devastating. I hope that you can find solace and comfort in these coming days, weeks, months and years knowing that there are so many more people in this world who do not tolerate, accept or in any way excuse hate crimes. I know there are few things in these times of pain and confusion that can bring any feeings of peace, I hope that it comes to you soon. I am sending you thoughts and prayers of love, compassion and peace I hope that you receive them.

I want to send my sympathies to the Lucero family. i also want to thank them and all other immigrants to this country, your presence here makes America better and stronger, and i sincerely and deeply thank you for being here.
I am so sorry for the hatred and anger far too many families have faced from bigots, and the hate-filled politicians who have encouraged them. I urge all decent people to stand up to the bigots and bullies in our own communities, and make this this last family who will lose a loved one to hate.

I am so very sorry that this atrocity has happened. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please, don't think that everyone is consumed with hatred. We're not. I, for one, believe in the brother/sisterhood of the human race. I believe we are better than this act makes us seem. I cannot be at the vigil tonight, but my heart will be there with you.

As a lesbian (another minority member who gets bashed for just existing), I offer deep sympathy for you and your entire community. Please know that you are loved and respected by millions of intelligent people. I am one. I hope you will bravely go on with your lives in defiance of the hateful ones. These haters are like terrorists: they want you to live in fear, to cower in your houses. I hope you do not give them the satisfaction.
I try to remember, when I am trying to forgive the hatred directed toward me, that hate is always based in fear and ignorance. Haters are stupid and scared. Even knowing that, I find it hard to forgive. But I know if I do not let go of the ugly feeling they have created inside me, that ugliness will eat away at me. I hope that in time, you will be able to heal yourselves of this tragedy with God's help. May the peace of Spirit be with you all.

I am shocked, outraged and saddened to hear of the murder of Marcello Lucero. I am not a praying person, but I will keep the family in my thoughts and do all that I can to bring attention to this tragedy. This DOES need to stop. All the very best.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of Marcello Lucero. I'm horrified at this hate crime. May there be an end to innocent blood shed out of ignorance and inflamed passions. We must all work to change the climate of hate.

My condolences to the family of Marcello Lucero.
At the Friday meeting at the temple in Patchogue, a gentlemen said he would teach us a word in Spanish: Lucero. He said that Lucero means "light", like a beacon, or a star in the sky. He suggested that Marcello could be a light guiding the way to healing and to more love and tolerance in the community. Let's make it so.
With love,
Kimberly

It is hard to imagine the fear that thousands of Latino residents of New York-- of our country must be feeling in the face of this crime. Their fear and their safety is a challenge for all of us.
The Not In Our Town Movement mourns the loss of Marcello Lucero. This tragic crime is the latest in a series of killings and attacks on immigrants by a group of young people who admit they were motivated by bigotry.
It is hard to imagine the fear that thousands of Latino residents of New York-- of our country must be feeling in the face of this crime. Their fear and their safety is a challenge for all of us.
Not In Our Town is dedicated to sharing the stories of communities responding to hate and intolerance. So far, the outcry against these hateful acts against immigrants around the country has clearly not been heard loudly enough.
It is heartening to see that Long Islanders are stepping up and joining together to say no to this festering hate. Your young people will be hearing your voices. We look forward to sharing your stories. niot.org

I am So very sorry for your loss. This type and all types of violence will only increase unless we all stand together. I pledge to stand with you, shoulder to shoulder and help people understand that what makes us different makes us the same. We are all united by individuality. Too many people have paid for ignorance.

How could somebody do this to another human being. What bigotry and hatred are these kids being taught? I hear this intolerance being spewed every day, it is disgusting. These perpetrators forget or are not taught the inhumanities and ignorance bestowed upon their own ancestors. No human being is better than another, all we have is our humanity. Marcello’s poor mother and family in Ecuador and his brother here in Long Island. It is heartbreaking for them. My heart goes out to the Lucero family. God Bless you.

I am a former Long Islander now living in California. I was appalled, shocked and saddened by Marcelo's tragedy especially in light of President-elect Obama's landslide victory. One would hope that hate is becoming a thing of the past, but sadly. it's not yet true. I hope that the young men who perpetrated this horrific crime are prosecuted to the full extent, along with their parents, who should be ashamed and held accountable.
To Marcelo's family, please know that the good people of America far outweigh the bad and that maybe he did not die in vain. I hope he becomes a symbol for tolerance and yes, more hope for the future.
