More than fifty people held a vigil at the Suffolk Legislature this morning to remember murdered Ecuadoran immigrant Marcelo Lucero. They laid flowers at a small shrine outside the legislative building and held a press conference afterwards, which Newsday and News12 covered.
Inside the legislature, two dozen speakers demanded that the county government stop fomenting hatred. Many agreed with the statement of Rev. McCarran, the representative of the Episcopal Diocese, that while "It takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to encourage that child to acts of violence".
The Long Island Immigrant Alliance thanks everyone who came to today's event. We also want to thank the thousands of people who have come to our events or events organized in their local communities to show solidarity with the Lucero family and press for the kinds of changes necessary to build a more inclusive Suffolk County.
The leaders of the major immigrant organizations will be meeting over the coming week to map a strategy to make sure that the tragic killing of Marcelo Lucero is not a "one day story".
