Public Engagement
Long Island Wins and director James Garcia Sotomayor are partnering to facilitate screenings of his film “Taught to Hate” across Long Island. We are reaching out to congregations, houses of worship, and other community spaces to host film screenings of “Taught to Hate.” After the screening, we will facilitate a discussion about how to make Long Island a more welcoming place for all. We ask you to provide a venue and for you to reach out to your members for a positive turn-out. We will supply the film, the materials, and the facilitators for the discussion.
What is “Taught to Hate” about?
The movie was directed by local film maker James Garcia Sotomayor. It focuses on tension around the issue of immigration, as well as hate crimes and the consequences a negative and unsafe climate can have for all members of a community. We think “Taught to Hate” is important because it tells the story in human terms of what happens when we allow hate to spread. There have been an increasing number of hate crimes on Long Island, such as the murder of Marcelo Lucero in 2008, and we believe it is critical for Long Islander’s to begin to build safer and more welcoming communities for all.
