WHO?

 WLI is a grassroots campaign to empower local communities and residents of Long Island, both immigrant and native-born.  All residents have a stake in this campaign since all residents desire safe, strong communities in which to live.
 WLI is connected to thousands of grassroots community members across the country through Welcoming America (the national network) who support the values of the campaign.

WHAT?

 WLI is a campaign to build strong communities on Long Island by reducing tension around the issue of immigration.
 Our goal is to create a positive, welcoming climate on Long Island by reframing the issue of immigration.

WHERE?

 WLI is focused on Nassau and Suffolk counties.
 WLI is part of a national network of 13 campaigns working to promote understanding and respect between recent immigrants and U.S.-born neighbors.

WHY?

 A broken national system combined with hateful rhetoric has produced fear, uncertainty, and violence in our local communities.
 As residents of Long Island we have the power to create a positive climate in our communities, building relationships based on respect and trust, rather than fear and uncertainty.

WHEN?

 WLI began organizing local community members in 2010.
 Long Island Wins (the organization coordinating the campaign) formed in 2005 in order to highlight the contributions of immigrants and build support for public and private immigration initiatives that benefit all residents of Long Island.

HOW?

 WLI is based on the “targeting the soil” model which shows that immigrant integration is most successful, and communities are stronger, when receiving communities become welcoming communities.
 We use creative messaging, educational events, and facilitated dialogue to shape our local climate.
