Youth For Western Civilization claims it is America’s Right Wing Movement. But it is really more a bunch of privileged white kids moaning about how people like them are victims. Of what? Of encroachment by non-white peoples. Every so often I visit their web site to remind myself of how pathetic these supposedly educated people are.
The official postings on the site are filled with strange disjunctions. Take this one for example on St. Patrick"s Day:
The world is decked out in green as people of Irish ancestry scattered around the globe (and those who want to join the fun) celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The annual parades are taking place in New York, Savannah, and Dublin. In Boston, Irish pubs began opening as early as 6 AM in preparation for the consumption of large quantities of Guinness and other Irish beers. Sadly, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the few public occasions left for people of European ancestry to embrace and celebrate the rich heritage of the West. It is a shame that we don’t have more of these holidays. They are sorely needed to counterbalance the cultural decadence that otherwise pervades our rotten society.
I love St. Patrick’s Day as much as any other fourth generation Irish-American. And I happily celebrate the Irish heritage of my family from Sligo. But I hardly consider the day one in which the “West” is celebrated, unless you mean the west of Ireland where my ancestors came from.
And few of my Irish friends revel in the day as a “counterbalance” to American “cultural decadence.
It is interesting that the Western Youth who wrote the article for the group’s web site does understands that the day is not exclusionist, thrusting non-Irish aside. It is open to anyone who wants to share in the fun. It was brought by immigrants from a despised foreign country belonging to an alien religion who desperately wanted to assert their cultural identity, wave their (foreign) flags, fly their nation’s color, and enlist in military units with names like “The Irish Brigade” under officers chosen because they were leaders in the immigrant Irish community.
That is why we traditionally invite all our neighbors to join the celebration, wherever their families hailed from. We were once outcasts in the land too.
Now back to the Western assault on good St. Pat.
After telling us to cling to St. Patrick’s Day, the author bemoans the day’s embrace by non-Western Americans:
My own theory is that St. Patrick’s Day fits into the multiculturalist paradigm because Ireland has a reputation as an oppressed nation. Leftists identify with the Irish for the same reasons they like the Palestinians and American Indians. Having Irish ancestry gets you instant “street cred” in the cult of victimization that includes blacks, homosexuals, women, unionized workers, and illegal aliens..
I don’t know. Do you get instant “street cred” with the “cult of victimization” because your name is Bill O’Reilly?
.
A Leftist can sing along and enjoy Irish fight songs like The Rising of the Moon.
Cheer, Cheer For Old Notre Dame is the Irish fight song. Rising of the Moon is an Irish Rebel Song. One sung by indigenous insurgents fighting a guerrilla war against an imperial power. That isn’t political correctness, that’s history.
The writer’s own Irish heritage is quite clear in his next statement:
My grandparents hail from Dublin, GA.
And I have friends in New London.
But wait, there’s more:
I also have distant Irish cousins in New York and Vermont. So naturally this resonates with me.
If a sense of ethnic identity can “resonate” from so tenuous a link, why does the Western Youth feel so much resentment at first generation Mexican immigrant celebrating the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe?
I can’t imagine what it must be like to be a left-wing individualist disconnected from one’s heritage and traditions.
I kid you not, That line follows immediately after the “this resonates with me” line..
Then our Western Youth, having honored St. Patrick’s Day as a ray of hope for Western Civilization in our “rotten” society, descends into stereotype in describing how he will honor my own patron saint:
I‘m sure everyone back home will be enjoying today’s festivities. Later, I plan to throw on a green t-shirt and partake in the fun myself. There are a few Irish pubs in the area I have been wanting to check out.
As my Grandpa Joe Brady liked to say, “God loves a fool”.
He surely does Grandpa.
