Anti-immigrant mayor loses in Illinois

Yet another anti-immigrant politician has exhausted his ten minutes of fame. In November it was a bunch of Know Nothings running on the Republican line. Yesterday it was a “populist Democrat” incumbent mayor in the Chicago suburbs. Independent challenger Bob Sabonjian unseated Waukegan Mayor Richard Hyde by more than 8% after Hyde went down the Steve Levy path and deputized his police as immigration enforcement agents. With about a third of voters yesterday Latino, Sabonjian won every one of the nine districts where Latinos are concentrated.
Hyde’s defeat in the large suburb has attracted national attention. Hopefully, when immigration reform is back on the national agenda, politicians will see that their self-interest does not lie in catering to the Minuteman constituency, but in backing sensible approaches to immigration reflect reality.
