Anti-Immigrant Student Group’s Adviser Forced to Resign

The self-proclaimed “right-wing youth movement,” Youth for Western Civilization, saw its faculty advisor removed at the University of North Carolina. Adviser Elliot Cramer, after being informed that a flyer had been circulated accusing him of supporting white supremacy and identifying his address, sent an e-mail response saying, “I have a Colt .45 and I know how to use it.” The university’s chancellor forced Cramer to resign as adviser, saying that the threat of gunplay was “highly inappropriate and not consistent with the civil discourse we are trying to achieve.”
Cramer now says that the e-mail was a joke.
Chancellor Holden Thorp replied that “he said it was a joke, and I said, ‘this just isn’t something we joke about.’”
Cramer is the second Youth for Western Civilization faculty adviser at UNC to resign this year. The group’s original adviser quit because he disagreed with the mission statement the group adopted.
