Appointment of Anti-Immigrant Activist to Georgia Panel Troublesome, If Unsurprising

Phil Kent is worried that there are just too many non-white people living in the United States. Too many black babies. Too many brown immigrants.

Kent is an anti-immigrant activist recently appointed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to a panel supposedly geared toward stopping illegal immigration in that state. Since 2001, Kent’s organization, Americans for Immigration Control, has been on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of hate groups.

Here’s a taste of how Kent views diversity in America, via his own website:

If this trend is not reversed…America’s white “centrifugal core” will slowly disappear. This leads to big questions: What will be the values and ideas of a multicultural America? What will it mean to be white after “whiteness” no longer defines the cultural mainstream?

And don’t get him started on African refugees, whom he refers to as “primitive peoples.”

You may not take a guy like Kent seriously – just another marginal racist – but the governor of Georgia does. You see, Nathan Deal views Kent as such expert on immigration that he appointed him to a seven-man panel to oversee the state’s enforcement of its new anti-immigrant law (and I do mean a seven “man” panel – there are no female appointees). The panel serves as a set of inquisitors to go after local governments that show insufficient enthusiasm for casting immigrants into jail.

All of the panel members, unsurprisingly, are white men.
