A new report from the Center for American Progress shows that the boycott launched by immigrant groups against Arizona after passage of SB 1070 had a real cost for the state.
The report looked exclusively at canceled convention business and found that an earlier estimate of $15 million in lost revenues greatly underestimated the actual cost. According to the Center for American Progress, actual losses were $45 million – just in canceled rooms. The total cost of lost conventions was much greater.
Hotels were not the only businesses that lost money. Everything from car rental and taxi services, to bars and nightclubs saw a drop in income. According to the report:
Analyzing average food and beverage, entertainment, in-town transportation, and retail sales brings the combined loss of estimated conference attendee spending up to a startling $141 million.
