Attempted Murder of Cab Driver Points to Climate of Hate

The attack on a cab driver in New York City Tuesday night is horrifying all New Yorkers. But it isn’t surprising us.

The cabby was brutally slashed after he identified himself as a Muslim to a passenger.

Long Islanders, familiar with the Marcelo Lucero story, know that when politicians mine hatred for political gain they endanger the lives of the targets of their prejudice.

Muslim Americans and Muslim immigrants, like Latino day laborers, are not pawns to be used for electoral advantage, they are people who are reduced to living in fear by the violent bigotry espoused by some.

You would think that Peter King and Rick Lazio, having seen up-close the climate of fear that Steve Levy helped create for Suffolk Latinos, would understand that the rhetoric around the downtown Islamic center was instilling the same anger that played out in the killing of Marcelo.

When we look back on the history of our country, we are never proud of the lynch mobs.

Or of those who inspired them.
