AZ Sheriff Says Obama Borders on Treason

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County came under fire this week for appearing on a white power radio program. Now, the Arizona Republic reports, he has also appeared on another right-wing program and said that President Obama is “borderline” treasonous. Here are excerpts from the article:

[T]he day before Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu appeared on a white supremacist radio talk show earlier this month, he was the guest of another extremist talk show host, who believes President Obama is committing “high treason” in his handling of illegal immigration.

When host Alex Jones of the “Alex Jones Show” asked Babeu whether he agreed that the president was committing treason, Babeu responded, “It borderlines that. I’m not gonna outright call it that. I’m still an officer in the Army.”

Babeu is a major in the Army National Guard.

When host Alex Jones asked Babeu a second time about the treason charge, Babeu did not dispute it.

“What’s so shocking is the president, our own government, stands against us and sides with a foreign leader,” he said.

When I asked Babeu on “Sunday Square Off” this weekend whether an officer should be accusing the commander-in-chief of “borderline treason,” he denied saying it. He added that “This is America” and he says the same things to whomever he speaks to.

Watchdog groups such as MediaMatters.Org say Jones is one of the leading government conspiracy theorists in the nation. He believes the September 11 attacks were an “inside job” by the U.S. government and President George W. Bush. MediaMatters has also reported on the Jones interview with Babeu.

Babeu also claimed in my interview, as he did in the interview with the “Political Cesspool” on July 10, that he did not know anything about Alex Jones’ background before the interview.

Anti-Defamation League director Bill Straus says Alex Jones makes the “Political Cesspool” hosts “look like George F. Will.”

Here is a profile of Alex Jones from the Southern Poverty Law Center:

Alex Jones is out to save the world.

From his perch as a radio talk-show host in Austin, Texas, he outlines the forces that threaten to enslave every man, woman and child on the planet. In his narrative, a cabal of wealthy corporations, the United Nations and government leaders are complicit in a fiendish plot to dominate the world.

Or something like that.

He’s the host of “The Alex Jones Show,” which airs six days a week on more than 60 radio stations and streams live on the Internet. His website is chock full of apocalyptic headlines and ads for products like “recession-proof coins” and manuals on “How to Survive Martial Law in America.”

If Jones’ ramblings were shaped into a screenplay, the resulting movie would stretch credulity to the breaking point. But Jones, in his booming radio voice, takes to the airwaves to sound the alarm with the earnestness of a true believer.

Jones believes, for example, that the federal government had a hand in terror attacks aimed at swaying American public opinion. “There was government involvement with the Oklahoma City bombing,” he said. “There’s a lot of evidence with 9/11 being staged.”

Jones said the main goal of his show is to expose listeners to the truth. “At my core, I have a drive to expose evil and corruption,” he said. “We have a dictatorship on the planet. The entire planet is being enslaved by global, dominant corporations.”

Jones ran for a Texas House seat in 2000 as a Republican but said he doesn’t follow the platform of either of the two major American political parties. “I’m a freedom lover, and someone who loves the truth.”
