AZ Sheriff Uses Militia Blogger as Info Source

Yesterday I told you that Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was in hot water for appearing on a white supremacist radio show. Well, the temp got turned up today when a journalist for the Arizona Star reported that one of the information sources the lawman cited was a militia blogger in Tuscon. According to the Arizona Star’s Tim Steller, Babeu relied on Michael Webster for information about inside dealings of the Mexican smugglers. Webster writes for Border Fire Report, a well-known anti-immigrant web site.

Reporter Steller asks if Webster is someone Arizona law enforcement should be relying on or citing for information. The homepage of Border Fire is filled with recruiting info from the Arizona Citizens Militia, with pictures of masked white men armed with automatic weapons setting out to fight Mexicans. There are banners to “Call Out The Militia,” etc., in big letter right up front.

None of it very subtle or easy for the sheriff to miss.

Babeu is famous as the sheriff in John McCain’s “build the dang fence” ad.
