CPAC: Where The Fringe Comes Together

The Washington Independent has an interesting article on the CPAC conference today. CPAC stands for the Conservative Political
Action Conference, making “CPAC conference” redundant (but everybody’s doing it, mom).  Last year, CPAC was the scene of the coming out party for anti-immigrant Youth For Western Civilization, the self-described “Right Wing Youth Movement”. This year, fringe movements that we didn’t even know about twelve months ago will be on display. Think birthers and teabaggers.

One speaker has already disparaged President Obama in racial tones. And Gail Collins of the New York Times found out that there will be a workshop offered on “nullification,” which is a word we don’t hear much these days. It means the states can decide that certain federal laws can’t be enforced inside a state. We thought that issue was settled when Robert E. Lee surrendered in 1865.
