A jury has convicted a man of murder as a hate crime for the Dec. 7, 2009 killing of an Ecuadoran immigrant in Brooklyn.

Keith Phoenix was found guilty of murdering Jose Sucuzhanay and of attempted assault as a hate crime for his attack on the dead man’s brother.

Phoenix and Hakim Scott attacked the two brothers after yelling anti-Hispanic and anti-gay epithets. Scott was convicted last month of manslaughter and faces 25 years in jail. Phoenix faces 25 years to life.
