The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating complaints of discriminatory policing against Latinos in Suffolk County, looking into whether or not Suffolk police adequately fielded criminal complaints made by Latinos, and/or whether Latinos were unfairly targeted by police.

LatinoJustice PRDELF recently forwarded me this information about upcoming Department of Justice outreach meetings, as well as their toll-free hotline for victims, witnesses, or other people who want to make complaints regarding discriminatory policing against Latinos in Suffolk.

You can speak to investigators confidentially, without giving your name, according to LatinoJustice. The Department of Justice has made it known that people can file complaints with them regardless of status, and that they will not to contact immigration authorities, a source from LatinoJustice said.

About the meetings and outreach:

The U.S. Department of Justice-Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York will attend two community meetings in Suffolk County on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

The DOJ and USAO are holding this meeting as part of their overall investigation of the Suffolk County Police Department and invite all individuals from the Suffolk County community who would like to attend to come.  The DOJ and USAO will be providing Spanish interpreters

Please be informed that the Department of Justice has set up both a toll free hotline for victims/witnesses/others to call: 877-795-3339, and an email for victims/witnesses/others to contact them for whatever reason: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Here’s the info on Sunday’s meetings:

9:30 am -12 pm
St Hugh’s of Lincoln, 1450 New York Avenue, Huntington Station, NY 11746

2:00 - 4:00 pm
St. Joseph the Worker, 510 Narragansett Avenue, East Patchogue, NY 11772
