Despite Long Odds, Talk of Immigration Reform Begins Anew

Politico reports that Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is working with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) again on trying to pass some version of immigration reform. Republicans concerned that their party may have gone too far in stirring up anti-immigrant sentiment hope that a bipartisan immigration reform effort might win back some Latino voters.

House Republicans will be a huge stumbling block for any, even very modest, immigration reform. However, the House leadership is interested in passing E-Verify, a mandatory program requiring all employers to check an immigration database before hiring workers. That program might be used as a bargaining chip to achieve some modest gain for a segment of the immigrant population.
