The FBI has alerted local law enforcement agencies that a call by a far-right group for governors to remove themselves from office may encourage more anti-government violence. The group is part of the “sovereign citizen” movement, believers in an ideology that holds that white people have a superior form of citizenship to non-whites and that groups of whites may impanel “grand juries” to run local governments. These groups have been influential in the formation of the thinking of the militias, the “patriot movement”, and some minutemen groups.
In Utah, a letter sent by the Guardians to the governor is said to contain no explicit threats of violence. On its web site the group urges adoption of its demands to avoid civil war and claims it is communicating with elements of the United States military about its commands.
A reading of the groups web site shows its members to be of the hyper-delusional sort, with a limited appeal beyond the wacky fringes. But the upsurge in hate-based and anti-government violence since the election of Barack Obama makes the group a subject of concern.
