Six Federal investigators met with Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, Police Commissioner Dormer, and other Suffolk officials yesterday to begin a probe into the handling of hate crimes by county government, according to Newsday. The investigation was prompted by revelations of a failue to investigate hate crimes following the November 2008 murder of Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue.
Det. Reecks, whoheads the Suffolk hate crimes unit and sits on the Hate Crimes Task Force had one of the odder reactions to the meeting with the Feds:“They clearly gave us an indication that this is not a witch hunt.”
It never was a witch hunt. It has always been a call to accountability.
