Peruvian children pose for a photo during a May 2010 visit from Long Island residents.
In April, a group of Long Island residents will travel to the Peruvian town of Huaral, where they will help launch a therapy program for children with special needs.
Footprints of Love, an Islip Terrace-based group that runs philanthropic trips to impoverished communities in Peru, is organizing the effort, and will hold a fundraiser on March 12 at Las Delicias II in Lindenhurst (895 North Wellwood Avenue; 9pm-2am; $12).
The organization was founded by Monica Rivera-Margas, a Peruvian immigrant who spent time volunteering with disadvantaged children in her native country before immigrating to the US. At present, the group runs trips to Peru twice a year, bringing clothing, food, and supplies to impoverished communities.
