Glenn Beck, Slavery, and Immigrants

Keith Olberman poked fun last night at Glenn Beck’s support of the Founders’ willingness to put a tax on slaves imported into the United States:

Glen
Apart from the fact that the idiot wind blowing from Beck’s mouth has reached hurricane force, and that he seems unaware of one of the most controversial aspects of American history, I want to address his ignorance of the immigration process. Beck wants to charge immigrants $10 to come to the United States. The average immigrant pays the immigration service over $1,000 now to immigrate here. And she pays more than $600 to Homeland Security to become a citizen, and that is before lawyers fees or any of the additional fees that are common enough.
Beck also propagates the notion that 19th Century immigrants had to go through a lot to come here. He does not metion that until 1892 virtually the only criteria for coming to the U.S. was that a person not be Chinese. No visas. No medical exams. No background checks. That was how the Founders wanted it, Mr. Original Intent!
