On November 8, 2008 several Latinos were attacked by some or all of the young men involved in the killing of Marcelo Lucero. One was Hector Sierra. He testified today at the trial of Jeff Conroy, accused of killing Marcelo Lucero.
According to Newsday, Hector Sierra was attacked by the seven young men around 11:30 PM, just before Lucero was killed. He was heading home from his restaurant job after 11 PM when several of the men jumped out of an SUV and chased him.
Newsday quotes Sierra as saying that “They started running toward me really fast. I was afraid, so I turned around and started running like hell.” He tripped and “They started punching me and kicking me from behind.” Sierra said he could not be sure which of the seven young men had actually hit him.
Here is how Newsday describes Sierra’s attempt to save himself:
As the youths kicked him, he said, he tried to get help from a nearby house.
“As I crawled away from them, they were kicking me from behind,” he said.
He kicked a door of a house and banged on a window, but no one in the house responded, he said. “They just turned the lights on ... but no one came out,” he said.
The beating finally stopped, and the boys got back into the SUV and sped off, he said. “Maybe they realized they couldn’t do anything more,” Sierra said.
