Newsday had to stop allowing comments on Marcelo Lucero stories at one point because they were so insulting to the victim. A high government official criticized the media for continuing to cover the death just a week after the killing. Some Suffolk elected officials have slammed any outside attempts to look at the series of attacks on Latinos in Suffolk, all the while claiming that their own research shows that prior to Lucero’s murder there was only one hate crime against Latinos in 2008.
Billy Kess is Long Island’s leading anti-immigrant blogger. I thought it might be useful to look at a recent post he made to understand the reaction of those who want to sweep this killing aside so that the climate of fear for Latinos can be restored. Here are excerpts from what he wrote recently:
Just as I predicted. Every aspect of this trial is jammed down our throats in this wall-to-wall coverage of the murder of Marcelo Lucero, an immigrant from Ecuador who was stabbed to death by a gang of white thugs in Patchouge, Long Island. Right now, not much else matters. Of course this is nothing but another attempt to brew up sympathy for illegal aliens and breed hate towards anyone who dares disagree with illegal immigration. We have already witnessed the ridiculous accusation by those dopes at the southern poverty law center when they claimed Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy shared some of the blame for Lucero’s murder.
Oh please!
Meanwhile, we have towns like Brentwood turning into a third world nation right before our eyes…
Here’s something you might want to try. Go to Google News and search for Eber Lopez. He was a 15-year-old boy missing for a month or so back in 2009 until his body was found beaten to death in the woods of Farmingville. Beaten by gang members. Google his name and see how many hits you come up with.
Now go to Google News and search for Marcelo Lucero and you’ll get this.
I think it’s a disgusting imbalance of news reporting here. Enough with the crying towels for Marcelo. ENOUGH. The guy didn’t deserve to be killed, but enough is enough with the damn news coverage. I want to see more about what we’re going to do with the Latino gang situation – that is killing more people than any off-the-cuff, isolated group of white kids can ever hope to kill. Let’s get our priorities in order here.
