How the Schumer Proposal Treats LGBT Families

The Schumer proposal for comprehensive immigration reform has been outlined in a 26-page memo. Compared to Schumer’s previous blueprint for reform, the proposal has considerable improvements in family-based immigration and one welcome revolution. The proposal recognizes that same sex couples are entitled to the same rights under the immigration laws as other families.

According to the Schumer proposal, the immigration reform bill will:

eliminate discrimination in the immigration laws by permitting permanent partners of United States citizens and lawful permanent residents to obtain lawful permanent resident status.

This would appear to open the way for same-sex married couples and those couples in civil unions to finally enjoy full immigration benefits.
