The March 21 march on Washington for immigration reform was just the opening event of a new phase of the struggle for an earned legalization for the undocumented. Dozens more rallies are planned for the weeks after the big march, culminating in coordinated May 1 rallies around the country.
The first rally was held just hours after the D.C. gathering. Thousands of people jammed the streets of Salt Lake City, Utah (Yes Utah!) for the second largest immigrant rally in that state’s history. A little later, four Catholic Churches in San Jose. California held an immigration rally that attracted nearly 1,000 marchers. Even Anchorage, Alaska, saw 100 people out at a demonstration calling for reform.
The Wednesday after the Washington march, hundreds of people rallied for immigration reform outside the San Francisco offices of Senator Feinstein. And last Saturday, several thousand immigrants marched yet again through the streets of Los Angeles.
Organizers around the country are planning dozens of coordinated demonstrations for May 1.
