Twice last month I spoke to law school classes about the Marcelo Lucero case and the trial of Jeff Conroy for Lucero’s killing. Both times students pointed out that Conroy had Latino friends and asked how he could be a hate criminal.
I thought back to a high school reading assignment. I had to read Jean Paul Sartre’s essay The Portrait of the Anti-Semite written almost immediately after the Liberation of Paris. Sartre noted that French anti-Semites almost always had at least one Jewish friend. It was as though they insisted on maintaining one relationship with a Jew to demonstrate the true alienness of all other Jews. The exception proved the rule.
Growing up, I remember a man my father knew who was extremely hateful towards African Americans. I asked him how he could hate blacks when one of his best friends was black. “Oh him? He’s as white as me”, was his reply.
