No. The killing of Marcelo Lucero is not a one day, or one year story.
Some Suffolk pols have said that this is story that should have died before Marcelo Lucero was even buried back home in Ecuador. But the opening of the trial of Jeff Conroy, who has confessed to stabbing the Ecuadoran immigrant, has re-focused national, and even international attention on the case, and on the toxic anti-immigrant climate that led the county here.
Newsday, as you would expect, is giving the case wall-to-wall coverage.
But so is the New York Times The Times article before the trial on the difficulty in finding jurors who weren’t racists has to worry Suffolk’s leaders. People around the country have been treated to a taste of the vile racial stew cooked up by the county’s political class..
The associated press, which feeds articles to hundreds of papers across the country, had this article on the first day.
Huffington Post has an extended article on the case which cites the Southern Poverty Law Center’s finding that Latinos in Suffolk live in a climate of fear.
The blogs have been alive with reports on the trial, with some noting that the trial’s start coincided with a major political announcement.
