Jury in Jeffrey Conroy Trial To Deliberate Into the Night

The jury in the trial of Jeffrey Conroy, who is accused of stabbing and killing Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, will continue to deliberate into the night tonight, possibly until as late as 9-10pm.

Throughout the day today, jurors have made a variety of requests, including a request to see all of the physical evidence in the trial, as well as a request for a read-back of the medical examiner’s testimony in regards to the stab wound that caused Lucero’s death.

I’ve also recently heard that the jury has asked to hear the cross examination of Detective John McLeer, the lead detective on the Lucero case. McLeer testified for the prosecution regarding the taking of Conroy’s written statement.

In the statement, Conroy confessed to stabbing Lucero. Click here for a pdf copy of the statement.

Det. McLeer’s testimony—even limited to the cross—is quite lengthy, so I’m not sure why they’ve chosen to hear it tonight, as opposed to tomorrow or Monday morning. The district attorney’s office confirmed an estimate that the read-back could take as long as two and a half hours.
