Jury selection begins today for Jeffrey Conroy, a 19-year-old Medford resident accused of stabbing and killing Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in a November 2008 attack in Patchogue. Four of the seven teens involved in the attack have pleaded guilty to various charges, but neither Conroy nor his lawyer—Conroy is the only defendant charged with murder and manslaughter, both as hate crimes—has not indicated that he will plead guilty.
The courtroom questioning of potential jurors should begin around 11am. Although there is at least one TV news station here, and several reporters, there doesn’t appear to be a swarm of reporters.

His back was to me and as I ran towards him he turned to face me. He was about four or five feet from me, I continued to run towards him and stabbed him once in either his shoulder or chest.
The physical altercation ended when I stabbed the guy. I said to Nicky “Oh shit I am fucked [I] stabbed him” as I showed him the blood on my knife.
