Learning More About Marcelo

Marcelo Lucero can seem more like a symbol to Long Islanders than a man, but he lived in Patchogue and walked the village’s streets every day. On Sunday you can join his friends and family, as well as Long Islanders like me who never met him, at a vigil at 2:30 PM at St. Francis DeSales Parish Hall (220 South Ocean Avenue at the intersection with Division Street in Patchogue).. We couldn’t stop his assailants three years ago, but we can stand with his community now.

This is a good time to learn more about Marcelo Lucero. We know a lot of our readers are searching our archives this week to look at some of the hundreds of stories we’ve brought you over the last three years. They range from the first report of the attack, through our exposure of the Levy administration’s responsibility for facilitating the upsurge in hate crimes, to the trial and conviction of Marcelo’s killer, as well as the Justice Department’s continuing investigation.

For a one hour overview of Marcelo’s life, the climate of fear in Suffolk, and the attitude of students at Patchogue-Medford High School towards immigrants, you can do no better than to listen to this radio documentary from Public Radio’s Bob Edwards. Here is the link. There are four segments in the middle of the linked page, each with a 15 minute portion.
