Levy hate crime numbers lie

(by Pat Young) Yesterday witnessed the disgusting spectacle of Suffolk Police Commissioner Dormer telling the media that hate crimes against Latinos are down under County Executive Steve Levy. What he should have said is that the willingness of immigrants to report hate crimes is down since Levy launched his anti-Hispanic campaign four years ago.
The stats show that in 2004, before Levy came to office, sixteen Latinos came forward to report bias crimes. A year later, with Levy announcing that he was looking into converting the cops into INS agents, the number of Hispanics coming forward dropped to six. Last year it dropped to one. Does any sane person believe that there was one anti-Latino bias incident in all of last year, a year that saw a surge in anti-immigrant violence nationally? How can Dormer announce that statistic with his head held high?
We know that Marcello Lucero’s murderers have attacked before. Did any of their victims report the attacks to the police? Were these attacks classified as bias crimes? If not, then Levy’s manipulation of statistics stands clear for all to see. Scare Latinos into silence and your bias crime rate goes down? I think not.
