Levy jokes about Lucero killing’s impact on his “week” the day after “heartfelt” speech

Newsday’s blog reports that one day after Steve Levy gave an emotional speech comparing the murder of Ecuadoran immigrant Marcelo Lucero to Kristalnacht, he made a joke about the killing’s impact on his week. In front of 800 mostly White business people he compared the impact of the Lucero killing to the procedures prior to a colonoscopy.
Now, as I say, this was not an off-hand remark to an aide, or an aside to a friend overheard by a reporter. This was part of a public presentation, one of the largest Levy gave this month apart from his “Address to the County”. Apparently Steve Levy confused the conference he was speaking at with a meeting of the Sachem Quality of Life organization where tying an immigrant’s death to matters scatalogical would no doubt have brought gales of laughter.
In the end, the rich palette of verbal devices employed by Steve Levy give us the choice of two metaphors for the impact of the killing of Marcelo Lucero-the Nazi war against the Jews or a colonoscopy.
