Live-Action Documentary on Irish Brigade To Air on St. Patrick’s Day

On St. Patrick’s Day, the Smithsonian Channel will offer a live-action documentary recreation of the history of the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War, a brigade that included New York’s own Fighting 69th infantry regiment.

Here’s the trailer for Fighting Irish of the Civil War:

With the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War just a month away, it is heartening to see that subjects ignored during the centennial celebration in 1961 – like slavery, African American soldiers, the important role women played on both the homefront and the battlefield, and the crucial participation of of immigrants in the war – are front and center.

Long Island Wins’ own series, The Immigrants’ Civil War, will hopefully help keep this aspect of the conflict from being forgotten.
