The Public News Service, which syndicates news stories for radio stations across the country, interviewed Long Island Wins director Maryann Sinclair Slutsky yesterday regarding the sentencing of convicted killer Jeffrey Conroy.

Conroy received the maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for stabbing and killing Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in a 2008 hate attack in Patchogue.

Here’s an excerpt:

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. - It was a hate crime that put Long Island in the national headlines, and now the teenager convicted of the most serious charges has drawn the maximum prison sentence.

“Every day I wish it never happened.” That’s what 19-year-old Jeffrey Conroy told the court about the killing of 37-year-old Marcello Lucero in 2008, but that apology won him no leniency. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Maryann Slutsky with Long Island Wins says the maximum sentence was appropriate, given the heinous nature of the crime.

“I really think justice has been served, particularly with Jeffrey Conroy. He was really the centerpiece of this whole, horrible crime.”
