Long Island Wins began working with local residents earlier this year on a project called Welcoming Long Island. The goal of this initiative is simple: To build strong communities on Long Island using creative messaging, education, and dialogue. Participants agree that our communities are safer and better places to live when neighbors know each other and talk about their differences in respectful ways. By providing opportunities for this kind of relationship building, residents hope to create a more positive, welcoming climate on Long Island.
With frustration mounting over the Obama administration’s lack of action on comprehensive immigration reform, projects like Welcoming Long Island are designed to empower residents to make a difference at the local level. Whether legislation is passed this term, or next year, or in five years, our ability to build strong relationships at the local level will affect the quality of the communities in which we live. We don’t need to wait for Washington to begin doing this!
The Village Times Herald ran an editorial (Tolerance is Achievable) about Welcoming Long Island a few weeks ago as a response to another piece (Tolerance Now) which noted the strong need for a tolerance initiative rooted at the local level. Welcoming Long Island is one attempt to begin meeting this need. Find out more by visiting the Action Center or going directly to http://www.welcominglongisland.com
