Back in September, I attended a preview of “Taught to Hate,” a short film that explored the familial roots of anti-immigrant hatred.
The film, directed by the Brentwood-based filmmaker James Garcia Sotomayor—himself an immigrant from Ecuador—was was based on the Marcelo Lucero killing, and has since played at the Long Island Latino International Film Festival and at numerous schools and community centers across the area.
After making the rounds locally, the message of “Taught to Hate” will now be traveling outside of Long Island: The short has been accepted into six film festivals over the past three weeks.
The most recent festival acceptances were at the 3rd Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and the Urban Suburban Film Festival, which also takes place in Philly.
Congrats to Garcia Sotomayor, who has invested lots of time, energy, and money into the production and promotion of “Taught to Hate.”
