A few months ago I was meeting with a Suffolk government insider. She told me, “around here you’re looked at as a far leftist.” I laughed, because I didn’t need to be told this. The county executive had once said that his opponents on immigration were “the lunatic fringe”, when asked if he meant all the friends of immigrants, he responded no, just people like Rev. Ramirez and Pat Young.
Levy has also called my views on immigration reform extremist. Since they are more or less the same views as President Obama’s and John McCain’s, I guess he’s defined extremism down.
Meanwhile, in Nassau, I’m trusted to advise the county on immigration policies, and in White Plains, I’m part of a police community/community collaborative.
I heard the good news yesterday that Margaret Chin was elected the first Chinese-born city councilperson to represent Chinatown. Margaret was the chair of the board of the New York Immigration Coalition a few years after I stepped down from that position. Her approaches were the same as mine and she now holds elective office in America’s largest city.
So if you want to know whether I’m really a far out leftist, I guess you need to decide where you want to ask the question.
By the way, congrats councilwoman!
