Marcelo Lucero Case: Christopher Overton’s Written Statement

Today at the trial of Jeffrey Conroy, who is accused of stabbing and killing Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, the public (but not the jurors), learned that Conroy may testify in his own defense.

If Conroy is called to the stand, possibly tomorrow, he’ll be asked questions by his attorney that will suggest that Christopher Overton, another defendant awaiting trial, actually stabbed Lucero, and that Conroy took the knife from Overton because Overton had outstanding legal problems.

With that in mind, I decided to post the written statement that Overton made to Suffolk police detectives after the alleged attack, as well as a sketch that he drew for police (above).

Here’s the typed version of the statement. I tried to retain the original grammar and spelling, although I added paragraph breaks for readability. Scroll down for images of the actual written confession, and click here for other written statements, including that of Jeffrey Conroy.

I, Chris Overton, [being duly sworn deposes and] say(s):

I was born August 7th, 1992, in Stony Brook N.Y. I live at X Yacht Street East Patchogue with my parents and two brothers. I am in 11th grade at Patchogue Medford High School.

Last night on 11/8/08 I was hanging out with some guys at the Medford train station. I am new to the school and I only know the first names of two of the guys I was with. Jose, who is a Puerto Rican black guy and Jeff is a white guy.

We left the Medford train station and went to Southaven Park. At the park some of the guys said they wanted to beat up some Mexicans. They called the Mexicans “Beaners.” Seven of

us got into a red SUV and went to Patchogue. Someone said there a lot of Spanish guys in Patchogue so we went there.

I was sitting in the back seat behind the driver when we saw a Spanish guy walking alone on a side street.

We all got out and some of the guys started chasing after him. The Spanish guy ran towards a house and everyone went back to the SUV.

We drove a little more and the driver parked someone in a parking lot in Patchogue.

We were all walking together when we saw two Spanish guys walking in our direction. They looked older to me.

An argument started between some members of our group and the two Spanish guys. One guy in my group said the Spanish guy was bleeding from just one punch.

I was standing a little back so I didn’t see the punch. About four or five guys were near one of the Spanish guys and suddenly three guys from my group started running.

At that time the Spanish guy moved toward a light and it looked like he had a belt in his hand. I saw that he had a lot of blood on the front of his shirt by his chest to his stomach.

As we were walking back to the car I heard one of the guys in my group say that Jeff stabbed the guy and that the knife was rinsed off in a puddle.

The only time I saw a knife was earlier at the Medford train station. I saw Jeff with a folding knife.

I have read this statement of two pages that Detective Tavares has written and I swear it is true.
