Newsday writer Joye Brown says that the trial of Jeff Conroy for the killing of Marcelo Lucero is gaining international attention. She says that “The whole world is watching”. Brown noted the unusual presence of international media in the Riverhead courtroom. She writes:“Lucero’s story resonates around the world because his quest for the American Dream - which so many other immigrants want - had a tragic ending.”
An attorney she spoke with who is providing commentary for a Spanish-language network said that Lucero’s lynching does not square with the view of people in many other countries that these sorts of racist mob attacks don’t happen here:
“He was a working man, who worked hard to support his mother and his family, and he was walking down the street and this happens?” Deonarine said, “Is that what happens in America? Is there justice in America?”
