Bloodstains found on Jeffrey Conroy’s knife and jeans matched that of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, according to a blood expert who testified in Conroy’s murder trial today. Lucero was allegedly stabbed and killed by Conroy in a November 2008 hate attack.
Newsday’s Carl MacGowan reports:
Bloodstains on the blade of a black-handled folding knife that prosecutors say was used to kill Marcelo Lucero in November 2008 match samples from the Ecuadorean immigrant, a Suffolk forensic scientist testified Wednesday in Riverhead.
Robert Baumann, a serologist at the county crime laboratory in Hauppauge, also testified in Suffolk County Court that Lucero’s blood was on a pair of jeans worn by stabbing suspect Jeffrey Conroy.
It was the first time in the five-week trial that blood evidence was used to link Conroy to Lucero’s death in Patchogue on Nov. 8, 2008.
But Baumann could not match stains taken from the knife’s handle to Conroy, 19, of Medford. He said samples lifted from the handle were from more than one person, and he could not link the stains to an individual.
