Maryann Sinclair Slutsky: Levy’s Departure Represents a Second Chance for Suffolk on Immigration

Steve Levy’s announcement that he’s not running for another term is nothing less than a second chance for Suffolk County.

No discussion of Levy’s record will be complete unless it covers the reputational damage he did to the county by making it too welcome a home for hate, the moral damage he did to Suffolk residents by failing to protect them from hate crimes, and the economic damage he inflicted by failing to maximize the economic potential of its immigrants.

And don’t forget that the U.S. Department of Justice is still investigating allegations related to his handling of hate crimes as part of an ongoing probe of Suffolk policing, a legacy of indifference to a pattern of hate crimes that’s had all too tragic consequences.
