In the Fall, Steve Levy reportedly was complaining that the media has devoted so much attention to the Marcelo Lucero killing. This was before the anniversary and before Levy drew even more attention by ambushing the Lucero family at a private memorial service so he could get a photo-op.
If he thought that the one-year anniversary of the killing in November would end media attention, he was wrong.
The Lucero case has worked its way into the national consciousness in a way that few other hate crimes have. Even when there are no new developments in the case, Marcelo’s name finds its way back into stories, columns, and editorials.
The New York Times, for example, has a short article today about an effort by Patchogue immigrants and native born to come together to heal the wounds caused by the murder.
Earlier this week, the Bob Edward’s Show, with more than 500,000 listeners nationally, diverted from its normal talk format to present an hour long documentary on the case, a radio doc that highlighted the role of Steve Levy in the story.
From Ricky Martin’s condemnation of the killing last week, to the blogs on the Huffington Post, to dozens of recent articles in the Spanish-language press, this ghost will not rest.
