Earlier today, I noted that Tom Ridge and Mike Gerson both took hits at the new Arizona anti-immigrant law. Now some more Republicans are weighing in. Here are a few:
Florida Senate Candidate Marco Rubio-“It could also unreasonably single out people who are here legally, including many American citizens.”
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush-“I think it creates unintended consequences. It’s difficult for me to imagine how you’re going to enforce this law. It places a significant burden on local law enforcement and you have civil liberties issues that are significant as well.”
Karl Rove-“I wished they hadn’t passed it. I think there is going to be some constitutional problems with the bill….At the end of the day,” he said, “I think there are better tools.”
Former Bush press secretary Dana Perino- “I understand that Arizonans are frustrated with the level of illegal immigration, and at the same time I can’t imagine that we’re going to allow police to stop people on the streets and demand their papers. Stronger enforcement is key, but this seems a bridge too far.”
Joe Scarborough-“It does offend me that when one out of every three citizens in the state of Arizona are Hispanics, and you have now put a target on the back of one of three citizens. I will tell you that this is un-American.” said
