New polling, commissioned by the pro-immigrant America’s Voice, shows support for the elements of comprehensive immigration reform remaining strong in spite of the recession.
For example, when asked what should be done about the 12 million undocumented immigrants already in the United States, 20% said “They must leave the country”, while 68% said “They should be required to register, meet certain conditions, and eventually allowed to apply for citizenship. In polling done in December, 65% said that Congress should take the issue of immigration in 2010. Support for reform is particularly strong among Democrats and Independents, with 69% of the former and 67% of the latter saying they support “Congress passing comprehensive immigration reform.”
The biggest single concern for voters about undocumented immigrants is that they need to pay taxes. Two-thirds of voters said they want to legalize immigrants as a way to make them into taxpayers.
