A new ABC News/Washington Post Poll shows Americans want action on undocumented immigration.
The survey shows that 57% support an earned legalization program for the undocumented in which immigrants pay a fine and taxes in exchange for legal status. But the poll also shows that 58% support the Arzizona anti-immigrant law. The fact that many Americans apparently support both may seem confusing, but my experience is that people just want something done, and if legalization appears stalled, they may be willing to back tough enforcement measures, at least on first impression.
When asked whether states should be allowed to make and enforce their own immigration laws, only 46% said yes. 52%said that immigration law was exclusively a Federal function. So, at least 11% of Americans both support the Arizona law and believe states should not make immigration laws!
The lack of Federal solutions is translating into trouble for Obama. While his overall approval rating is 52%, his approval on immigration is only 39%, which is lower than his approval on handling the Gulf oil spill.
