Next for Arizona: No Birth Certs. for Children of Undocumented?

Not content with making his state the most racially divided in the country, Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce is pushing for an even more dramatic attack on Latinos next year. The author of SB 1070, the state’s racial profiling bill, wants to push a measure that would deny birth cerificates to the U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants. These children are U.S. citizens under the Constitution. By denying the birth certificates, Pearce hopes to make it impossible for the children to later prove they are citizens, placing them in danger of being wrongly deported.

Stephen Lemons at Phoenix New Times writes:

Last night, [a local TV news program] revealed some nasty e-mails Pearce has received and sent from his state Senate office account. One of those written to Pearce was chilling:

“If we are going to have an effect on the anchor baby racket, we need to target the mother. Call it sexist, but that’s the way nature made it. Men don’t drop anchor babies, illegal alien mothers do.”

Pearce found nothing objectionable to the sentiment or the language. Keep in mind, this is the primary sponsor of SB 1070, a man who wants to be President of the state Senate, though he is already very powerful as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Remember also that if Governor Jan Brewer is elected in November, there will be no veto to stand in his way.

Pearce has proposed equally odious legislation previously, such as only allowing Americans to wed Americans, sanctioning landlords who knowingly rent to illegal aliens, and so forth.
