Nexus of Utah List Was Latino Children

The list of 1,300 alleged undocumented immigrants released last week by two state employees in Utah was largely generated by going after the immigrant parents of Latino children born in the United States.

While at least 20 people on the list were in the US legally, and 200 cannot be identified and may simply have been “made up” in the words of one state employee, the remainder were primarily parents of Latino children who were US citizens by birth. When the parents applied for assistance for their children, they gave the state information about themselves that was then mined by these anti-immigrant activists.

Politicians like Suffolk’s Steve Levy have long called Latino children “anchor babies.” Even though these children are US citizens by birth under the United States Constitution, they are the particular objects of hatred by anti-immigrant groups. They are seen by these groups as undermining the racial constitution of the United States. This is why these two state workers would not scruple to endanger the health and safety of Latino children, even though these “anchor babies” are as much US citizens as the two criminals behind the list.
